Opportunity Now Grant Award to Scale our Work in Healthcare Pathways in the San Luis Valley

We are thrilled to announce that The Attainment Network and our partners in the San Luis Valley have been awarded an Opportunity Now Colorado Grant Program to scale our work in healthcare pathways!

Opportunity Now Colorado is an $85 million grant program catalyzing transformative change for Colorado’s workforce.  It is a grant initiative of the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), the program seeks innovative solutions to meet Colorado’s workforce needs through industry and education collaboration. Opportunity Now funding will support our vision and goals for the San Luis Valley Career-Connected Pathways Partnership.

This is a testimony to the strength of work underway with the SLV Career-Connected Pathways Partnership and demonstrates the state’s commitment to rural communities, especially in the San Luis Valley. The Attainment Network is pleased by the state’s ongoing commitment to our goal of increasing the number of diverse learners and earners across Colorado gaining family living-wage employment. Thank you to the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade and to the Opportunity Now team for this important investment.

The Attainment Network is honored to support this community-led effort to meet the needs of the SLV community and employers by developing accessible, impactful, and learner-centered healthcare pathways. This important initiative enhances economic mobility across the SLV through intentional alignment across K-12, postsecondary, nonprofit, and healthcare systems. With over 24 partners, including the largest employers and training providers in the area, the SLV Partnership is building a robust, replicable model for cross-system collaboration within a rural ecosystem.

Through the Opportunity Now investment we are prepared to deepen and expand the amazing work of our partners in the Valley to ensure all learners have the opportunity to pursue a quality career in healthcare. Funding from Opportunity Now will help meet the immediate and long-term needs of SLV’s healthcare workforce and will catalyze expansion into other industry areas to meet a range of industry needs in the Valley. We and our partners are prepared to deliver on these priorities to support the long-term vitality of the community and generations of Valley residents to come.

Vision and Goals for SLV Partnership

Since January 2022, The Attainment Network has developed a vision and strategy with 24 healthcare employers, community-based organizations, and educational institutions in the San Luis Valley to:

  • Activate a community vision shared by K-12, postsecondary, and Valley employers to expand healthcare career pathways across the San Luis Valley.
  • Honor the deep knowledge and expertise of the SLV community.
  • Engage K-12 districts to identify and expand access to career-connected programming and career certifications.
  • Invest in work-based learning opportunities, including paid internships.
  • Advance upskilling/reskilling healthcare programs with employers.
  • Offer compelling education and skills training opportunities for youth & adults that leads to economic opportunity.
  • Build a scalable, replicable model for partnership in other industries.
  • Foster systems-change through collaboration, capacity- and relationship-building for long-term sustainability.

The Opportunity Now investment further aligns our vision and strategy with the state’s priorities and will provide resources to scale the work underway in the region and builds upon the regional partnership foundation that is serving the needs of the local community through proximal leadership, committed partnership, and a focus on evidence-based practices using data and evaluation.

Our recent L/Earner Voice Symposium offered a powerful reminder that systems are stronger when they are shaped by the people they are meant to serve. The learners and earners who presented Ted Talk-style reflections have worked with education and workforce organizations that value the expertise and lived experiences of learners and earners. They shared honest reflections about the difference between simply inviting young people into conversations and creating environments where their insights and ideas genuinely shape decisions, opportunities, and outcomes. Throughout the discussion, several themes emerged consistently: the importance of authentic engagement, the need for empowering environments where young people feel safe sharing ideas, and the role relationships and mentorship play in building confidence and opportunity. Speakers emphasized that learners are not only participants in education-to-workforce systems — they are experts in the challenges those systems are trying to solve. Panelists also spoke candidly about the barriers many young people face, including financial limitations, self-doubt, and the need for spaces that support both personal growth and guidance. “Young people deserve to get paid for their work,” said Gabriela Chavez, urging organizations to avoid situations where only young people who can afford to participate are the ones who get heard. Our learner and earner speakers also shared inspiring stories about moments when their voices influenced real change — from improving programs and products to advocating for education funding and mentoring others. Anyshya Hemphill had a moment when she learned that her insights and leadership led to 400 young people engaging with the networking guidance provided by the DeBruce Foundation. “That was the moment I was like, okay — wait, what I said actually made a difference.” Thank you to all of our learners and earners who shared their experience.

Lasting systems change doesn’t happen by chance. It happens when schools, colleges, employers, and communities work together toward shared goals — and someone helps connect the pieces into a coherent system that drives results. That’s the role of intermediaries. In this short video, learn how intermediaries like The Attainment Network help bridge silos, build trust, align partners, and support implementation that leads to lasting impact. Hear how this approach is helping communities like the San Luis Valley strengthen education-to-workforce pathways and meet critical workforce needs. Watch the video to see why intermediaries are essential to turning collaboration into action.
